Meet Dr. Ryan McColl MD FRCSC
General Surgery, Clinical Lecturer, University of Calgary
Dr. Ryan McColl MD FRCSC is a Canadian General Surgeon with fellowship training in Colon and Rectal surgery. He earned his medical degree from the University of Alberta before completing a five-year residency in General Surgery at the University of Calgary in 2011. Dr. McColl is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Dr. McColl began his career with a broad-based General Surgery practice that included endoscopy, acute care surgery, and oncologic surgery involving breast, thyroid, and colorectal disease, as well as hernia repair and gallbladder disease. He subsequently pursued advanced fellowship training in Colon and Rectal surgery at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver from 2014 to 2015.
Since establishing his practice in Red Deer, Dr. McColl has maintained a busy Colorectal surgery practice, addressing the full spectrum of colorectal disease. He has played a leadership role locally, spearheading the development of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program in Red Deer and establishing multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal Tumour Board rounds to enhance collaborative cancer care. Since 2022, he has served as an Examiner for the Royal College Colorectal Surgery Examination Board, contributing to the evaluation and training of future colorectal specialists across Canada.
In 2025, Dr. McColl developed a clinical interest in Venous Disease and chronic venous insufficiency. He has undertaken extensive training at Aurora under the supervision of Dr. Ollewagen, as well as with physicians at the Vein Treatment Centre in Calgary, expanding his expertise to provide comprehensive vein care.
Raised in Edmonton, Dr. McColl now lives in Red Deer with his family. Outside of his surgical practice, he is passionate about fitness and sports, including hockey and golf. He enjoys camping and fishing with his family and is actively involved in his children’s hockey, participating as a coach in Red Deer Minor Hockey. Known for his personal and affable bedside manner, Dr. McColl is deeply committed to providing compassionate, patient-centered care with the highest standards of surgical excellence.
