For most Canadians, summer is a wondrous season filled with many joyous outdoor activities. The warmth and sunshine is cherished by most of us, considering that our winters are generally considered far too long. Not only is the cold often unbearable in the winter, but the frigid and blustery winter air tends to dry our skin out.
As explained by Dr. Jaggi Rao on FacingAcne.com, “when it’s cold outside it can cause dryness in the skin. When your skin is dry it’s the perfect place for bacteria to live and cause annoying breakouts. This can be troublesome because we are used to using drying ingredients like benzoyl peroxide to fight blemishes. Substances like this can actually have a negative effect.”
Is the summer heat better for our skin?
When the temperature is hot, it is also often humid. Hot and humid weather won’t dry your skin out the way the cold winter air does. However, that doesn’t necessarily make it “better” for your skin. Humidity, as you can imagine, causes sweating. With excess sweating, your pores are a lot more likely to become clogged.
This, says Dr. Rao will enhance the probability of acne breakouts. “The moisture in the air is also going to trick your body into thinking that it needs to produce more oil than normal, which can be a nightmare for people with already oily skin,” he reports.
It all depends on what your skin likes.
Tracy Raftl is an expert on acne and acne control. She suffered mightily from breakouts as a young girl and has used her experiences to help others with finding ways to clear their skin of acne. On TheLoveVitamin.com, Raftl explains that heat and humidity don’t necessarily have the same effect on everyone’s skin. She notes that certain skin types are impacted by the toxicity of their perspiration.
“Some people break out in the summer in humid heat, possibly because if your body is very toxic, your constant sweating will contain toxins that may irritate your skin,” she informs, “It also tends to make oilier skin oilier. People may also break out more if chemical sunscreens are used on the skin that aren’t in winter.”
To solve the problem of toxicity, Raftl recommends a healthy lifestyle that includes nutritious eating. This will lessen the amount of toxins in the sweat and prohibit an overproduction of oil. One can still keep his/her skin from drying out by consuming foods that are rich in good fats and Omega-3s. Salmon and avocados are often recommended for this purpose.
