Creating A Skin-Healthy Grocery List

We have all heard the idiom “you are what you eat”. However, we believe it is more appropriate to say “the health of your skin is determined by what you eat”. Yes, we recognize that it is not as snazzy a phrase. But it’s definitely more accurate. What is on your grocery list? Many of the items you put on your list can be excellent for your skin health. What are they?

Watermelon.

Sweet, juicy and delicious watermelon is a summertime favourite. Especially if you plan on attending picnics and barbeques this summer, there’s no reason to leave watermelon off your grocery list. The high concentration of water in watermelon is excellent for hydration. That is always a plus for your skin. As well, the water content of this fruit helps to reduce the water retention that leads to puffiness around the eyes.

Salmon.

For many people, salmon is listed as a favourite type of fish. It’s not only easy to cook and pretty delicious, but it is also rich in antioxidants. As a result, eating salmon helps to lower inflammation. Salmon is also well known for being rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Since our bodies can’t produce these fatty acids alone, eating omega-3-rich foods helps to reinforce our skin’s barrier. This keeps moisture in and irritants out.

Avocados.

This delicious superfood is rich in folic acid, omega-3, magnesium, potassium, lutein and fibre. Avocados are also chock-full of vitamins A, C, D, E and K. This is why the fruit is often used as a top ingredient for face masks. Of course, with all of its nutrients, eating avocados also provides numerous benefits for your skin.

Almonds.

Rich in vitamin E, these yummy seeds offer powerful antioxidants that help to prevent the signs of aging. Consuming almonds can increase vitamin E levels on the skin’s surface helping it to become less dry.

Green tea.

Green tea contains polyphenols. This makes it both an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory. As a result, green tea is often used as a toner to treat acne. It’s also known for healing blemishes and scars while flushing out toxins. Green tea also keeps skin smooth and supple. As well, it contains vitamin K. This helps to lighten dark circles under the eyes. In fact, you can put used green tea bags in the fridge to use later as an effective under eye treatment.

Carrots.

This popular orange vegetable isn’t for bunnies alone. Do away with that stereotype by making them a regular part of your diet. Why? Carrots are high in beta-carotene which is a precursor to vitamin A. Therefore, eating carrots can help you to decrease your skin’s oil production. Carrots have also been known to help improve psoriasis.
