Is Sunscreen Really Necessary In The Fall?

Although we still have plenty of summer to enjoy, the fall season is fast approaching. When chillier temperatures eventually arrive, long-sleeved shirts, pants and jackets will become the norm again. As a result, a lot less skin will be exposed to the sun.

This also means that we should put away the sunscreen until next summer. Or should we? Chilly days are misleading. Naturally, it can still be sunny on a day that requires us to bundle up. So, regardless of the temperature, the sun’s harmful UV rays are still at work. Therefore, to be perfectly clear, wearing sunscreen is still very necessary in the fall. In fact, it should be worn all year round!

Why is sunscreen necessary all year round?

As mentioned, cancer-causing UV rays are beaming down at all times of the year. Even when there is cloud cover, it is still worth applying sunscreen in order to be protected from these rays. On Bustle.com, Tyler Atwood notes that a severe sunburn can take place during any month of the year. She cites New York-based dermatologist, Dr. Jeremy A. Brauer as an expert on the matter.

“It is very important that we are aware of and protect ourselves from sun exposure year round,” explains Dr. Brauer in an email, “When discussing sun exposure it is important to understand that we are talking about two main wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation. Ultraviolet A and B (UVA and UVB) light are the cancer causing wavelengths. UVA is present year round, at all times of day, and is unaffected by a cloudy day.”

How powerful are the sun’s UV rays during the winter?

Believe it or not, the wintertime makes things even worse for our skin. This is especially true when there is snow on the ground. The bright white surfaces give UV rays ample opportunities to bounce up into our faces. Sun damage, therefore, is not only possible during the coldest months of the year. It is more likely to occur than in the warmer months that precede them.

“Just as water reflects light back at you in the pool or on the beach, snow can have the same effect,” explains Brittney Morgan on ApartmentTherapy.com, “Snow can reflect up to 80 percent of the UV light from the sun, so when you’re outside in the winter, you often get hit by the same rays twice.”

Morgan goes on to dispel a couple of myths about skin protection during the year’s coldest months. She reminds us all that temperatures have nothing to do with how badly the sun can damage our skin. “If you’re going to be facing heavy sun exposure throughout the day, you still need to reapply every two hours,” she insists.
