We pay quite the price to keep ourselves silky and smooth, don’t we? Our everyday hair removal techniques literally cost us a lot of money. All of those razors, shaving creams, wax strips, hair removal creams and salon appointments really add up! But, in addition, each of our chosen methods of removing unwanted hair generally has a long list of side effects.
Shaving.
Most people select this quick and easy hair removal method, making it the most popular of them all. The problems with shaving are the many skin irritations that often result. The side effects of shaving, as many of us know, include, but are not limited to ingrown hairs, razor bumps, razor burn, rashes, nicks, cuts and scratches. What is left behind after a shave is often worse than the unwanted hair itself!
This is especially true if you use the same razor over and over again. If you forget to change the blades, dull or rusty metal may cause irritation or infection. As well, shaving can cause folliculitis. This is an infection in the hair follicle which is usually caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus (staph).
Waxing.
For most of us, waxing is synonymous with the word “ouch!”. Simply put, pain is the most obvious and inevitable ramification of selecting waxing as a hair removal method. Layering hot wax on your skin may sound like a crazy idea. That’s because it is! Wax strips are applied to the hot wax and then literally ripped off of your skin. It pulls hairs directly from their roots. So, needless to say, it is extremely painful.
You will especially pay the price if you wax your upper lip. It’s a pretty common practice among women. The side effects of lip waxing include intense pain, increased chances or being prone to ingrown hairs, the formation of red bumps (especially in people with increased lip sensitivity) and minor bleeding. Not a pretty picture, is it?
Threading.
This is a hair removal method that is most commonly used on the face – particularly the eyebrows. A thin piece of thread is twisted and rolled along your skin’s surface. It entwines the hairs in the thread and quickly lifts them from the roots.
Threading, as you may have guessed, is not a pain-free hair removal method. Much like tweezing, the yanking of hairs can produce some extreme discomfort. Not to mention, side effects of threading include redness, puffiness and ingrown hairs.
