As we approach the middle of October, Canadians are getting used to much cooler temperatures. With temperatures only bound to get colder by the day, you might be concerned about the drying out of your skin. In Canada, the fall and winter seasons are times of the year when we have to be especially mindful about exfoliation and moisturizing. Both activities are great ways to go about restoring our skin’s natural beauty.
Believe it or not, maintaining a smooth, silky and youthful look is actually easier than you think. There are a few natural steps you can take to hold on to your natural beauty.
Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption!
We recognize that, for most people, this suggestion is easier said than done. Actually, this may be an especially harsh request since the holiday season will soon be approaching. After all, you’re bound to be invited to a number of holiday parties which will, in all likelihood, have plenty of alcoholic refreshments to choose from.
However, using “alcohol” and “refreshment” in the same sentence can be considered oxymoronic. Drinking alcohol does the opposite of refreshing you. It actually dries out your skin. Smoking, it should come as no surprise, has the same effect.
“Drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes doesn’t do our skin any favours,” confirms the Belfast Telegraph, “Too much alcohol causes skin to dry out and eyes to become puffy – not the best start for boosting your natural beauty. Quit smoking, and only drink in moderation to improve your skin’s elasticity and reduce puffy eyes. This is a sure-fire way to make you look younger and more beautiful.”
Drink plenty of water!
It should come as no surprise to you that being hydrated is a top way to maintain healthy skin. Our skin gets hydrated from the inside out. It does this by pulling fluid from the capillary blood flow in the skin. If there isn’t enough water to pull from, you skin can effectively dry out. This information comes by way of Dr. Kathleen C. Suozzi via an EverydayHealth.com article by Leah Groth.
“One small study published in 2015 in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology did suggest a relationship between hydration and skin health,” reports Groth, “Specifically, researchers found that in individuals with low daily water consumption — that is, those who were dehydrated to begin with — increasing water intake had a positive effect on skin appearance and helped maintain skin hydration levels.”
Get your beauty sleep!
It’s not just a mythical euphemism. Beauty sleep is a real thing. When we sleep, our skin cells renew themselves. A lack of sleep, on the other hand, leaves us looking haggard and tired. This leads to the presence of fine lines, wrinkles and bags under our eyes.
“If you have trouble getting your beauty sleep, try and relax,” suggests the Belfast Telegraph, “Add a few drops of aromatherapy oils to your bath, try deep-breathing exercises, and avoid caffeinated drinks before you head to bed.”
