The Art Of Removing Dead Skin Cells From Your Face

There are dead skin cells all over your face. In fact, there are dead skin cells all over your body. But don’t be alarmed! This is completely normal and happens to everyone. You’re not doing anything wrong. You’re human. And, as a result, you’re prone to having skin cells that only live between 40 and 56 days. As Aaron Guldager informs us on SIOBeauty.com, we have anywhere between 30,000 and 40,000 skin cells dying every minute!

He notes that this is a good thing. After all, it’s much better to allow the younger cells underneath the dead cells to make our skin look and feel smoother. Problems can arise, however, if our dead skin cells aren’t being removed. Don’t assume they just go away on their own. It’s up to us all to remove dead skin cells from our bodies to avoid the onset of potential skin irritations.

“Your dearly departed skin cells can clog your pores, which causes pimples and blackheads that will haunt you forever (OK, not forever, but it will feel like forever),” writes Guldager, “And if that’s not scary enough, a thin layer of dead skin will make your face look dull and lackluster. Talk about terrifying!”

Exfoliate.

There are numerous ways to remove dead skin cells from your face. And exfoliation generally tops most recommended lists of methods. On GQ.com, Adam Hurly explains the importance of cleansing your face with a gritty scrub at least twice a week.

“It’s important to be gentle with your scrub, since this is where you can really overdo it and leave the skin reddened and irritated,” he writes, “But fear not, most scrubs do their job without much force, and they help lift the otherwise invisible dead layer of skin from atop your face.”

Steam.

Steaming your face is a very gentle, relaxing and natural method of dead skin cell removal. Doing so helps to open up the pores of your face, loosening up the dead skin cells that rest on it. Guldager explains that there are numerous methods to steaming your face. One is the washcloth method which involves soaking a soft washcloth in hot water and then letting it rest on your face for five to ten minutes. There is also the popular “Big Bowl Method”.

“While the washcloth method may be easier, this second approach is a little more effective,” Guldager points out, “Simply take a large bowl or water basin, fill it with water that’s just off the boil, set the bowl on a table or desk, and then sit with your face above the steaming water. Let your skin steam for about five minutes.”

Microdermabrasion and chemical peels.

At Aurora Skin & Vein, we offer both! Microdermabrasion gently removes dead, dry layers of cells to reveal fresh glowing skin. The treatment is a safe, minimally invasive and effective form of mechanical exfoliation designed to gently remove dead skin cells and stimulate collagen production. Chemical Peels can improve acne-prone skin, decrease fine lines and wrinkles and treat hyperpigmentation and signs of aging.
