What Is The Secret To Maintaining A Youthful Look?

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a literal fountain of youth? If there was, we’re pretty sure that there would be extremely long line ups on a daily basis. It would be comprised of people from all walks of life who want to stay young. Well, we all know that no such fountain exists. However, there are certainly ways we can all work towards maintaining youthful looks.

Beware the sun – yes, even during winter!

Most people assume that when it’s hot, it’s sunscreen time. They forget that sunscreen doesn’t protect you from heat. It protects you from the sun’s harmful UV rays. The wintertime, of course, is filled with cold days. But the sun is still out, right? Continue to use sunscreen or be sure to stay out of direct sunlight for long periods of time. Those rays are still beaming down on our faces in attempts to produce fine lines and wrinkles among other ailments of the skin.

“Always, always, always wear sunscreen with at least a 30 SPF rating, and make sure it’s broad-spectrum (blocks both UVA and UVB rays),” insists Dr. David H. Rahm of VitaMedica, “Doesn’t matter if the day is cloudy or bright – the UV rays are always there. And remember to reapply every few hours so it continues to protect your skin.”

Consume omega-3s.

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in such foods as salmon, walnuts and seeds. As reported by Megan Falk on Shape.com, they help to stabilize your mood, maintain bone strength and help prevent visible signs of aging by reducing inflammation in the body. With the help of anti-aging expert, Dr. Nicholas Perricone, Falk explains that omega-3 fatty acids keep you healthy and your skin radiant.

“Omega-3s also boost the ability of the body’s enzymes to pull fat out of storage — from your hips, say — and use it as energy,” says the doctor, “Omega-3s keep you healthy and your skin radiant.”

Do your best to reduce your stress.

Stress ages you. It’s that simple. We all have different things that stress us out each day. It’s incredibly important to find ways to reduce it. You know how they say “laughter is the best medicine”? It’s not at all far from the truth. Find a show or movie that makes you laugh and a song or album that makes you want to sing. Staying happy helps you to stay young!

“Staying young means stressing less,” says Dr. Rahm, “Set aside a small chunk of time every day, about 10-20 minutes, to relax, meditate, or just breathe deeply, while letting worries melt away and helping yourself look younger naturally. A long list of studies have found that stress, including conditions such as untreated depression, social isolation, and anxiety can speed up cellular aging.”
