Among the many things that you likely have on your summer to-do list is “get a tan”. We get it. It’s warm and sunny in the summertime. If you’re like most Canadians, you likely couldn’t wait to ditch the toques and scarves for the shorts and tank tops. It makes sense. Many of us long for good weather and wish it would never go away.
Here’s the thing. While being out in the sun can often allow for a lot of fun times, it’s vital that you protect your skin from the sun’s dangerous UV rays. We know what you’re thinking. How am I supposed to get a tan if I avoid the sun? Well, let’s be clear about something. “Tan” is a synonym for “skin damage”.
Why should tanning be avoided?
When your skin darkens due to it being exposed to the sun for prolonged periods of time, it’s because it has sustained skin cell damage. We understand that tans are highly regarded as attractive. However, it’s important to keep in mind that skin cancer is deadly. The more you tan, the higher your risk of getting skin cancer.
This is especially true for tanning in tanning beds. Allow us to be perfectly clear here. There is almost nothing worse for your skin than exposing it the UV radiation produced by tanning beds. While you may not be in the market for an indoor tan during the summer, it’s important that we stress the importance of avoiding tanning beds at all costs.
“Tanning beds don’t offer a safe alternative to sunlight; they raise the risk for skin cancers,” informs the Skin Cancer Foundation, “One study observing 63 women diagnosed with melanoma before age 30 found that 61 of them – that’s 97 percent — used tanning beds.”
Tanning can be addictive.
Even with the information presented to you, we can understand if you just can’t help but want to sit out in the sun this summer. Tanning is, in fact, a known addiction for many people. The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Sun & Skin News reports that a 2017 Georgetown University Medical Center study found that 20 percent of women who tan show signs of tanning dependency.
“The researchers ran 400 women through a set of mental and behavioural tests both before and after a tanning session,” she informs, “Those who were labelled as having an addiction strongly believed in the physical and mood-boosting benefits they experienced after a tanning session. They were convinced it enhanced their appearance and attitude, ultimately making them feel better about themselves.”
